Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) is accepting applications for the Assistant Director of Human Resources , SUSLA is a comprehensive community college serving Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas in Northwest Louisiana.  It is one of five campuses constituting the Historically Black Southern University System.  The University serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate students and offers 32 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields including Allied Health, Nursing, Aerospace Technology, Business Studies, Behavioral Science/Education and Science & Technology.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Reporting to the Director, the Assistant Director of Human Resources will serve as the main HR contact for employees and support the HR Director in day-to-day operations providing HR guidance and support to all SUSLA departments. This position carries out responsibilities in the following functional areas: recruitment/selection, onboarding/orientation, benefits administration, employee relations, performance management, policy implementation, training and employment law compliance while maintaining an atmosphere of trust and confidentially. Specific duties are:

 

  • Full responsibility for all recruitment and selection processes while maintain compliance with EEOC, Federal, State and University requirements including background checks
  • Coordinate new hire orientation
  • Provide tracking data for Affirmative Action Plan
  • Provide assistance to management team on routine University policies and procedures, Civil Service rules, Federal and State laws, and department policies and procedures
  • Oversee company benefit programs/plans by providing assistance to associates on benefits and payroll related issues
  • Maintain proper maintenance of human resource files and database while remaining in compliance with government and company requirements for record keeping/retention
  • Processes pay/promotion adjustments as dictated by company
  • Creates and compile reports/statistical data to support the needs of the University
  • Manage/file Worker’s Compensation, provide data to Risk Manager/Administration
  • Coordinates internal investigations related to any regulatory compliance issues as well as company policies, Title IX assistance, etc.
  • Assists and advises in the proper application of regulatory issues, including but not limited to FMLA, ADA, FLSA, etc.
  • Processes requests, investigates employee issues in the grievance/fair treatment review process
  • Coordinate required training, Comprehensive Public Training Program (CPTP), and maintain associated records
  • Assists with routine Visa processes as needed (e.g. working with legal, applications, maintaining files, renewals times, etc.)
  • Participates in planning special events, communications, and fosters employee participation
  • Assist with terminations, process terminal pay, etc.
  • Reaching effective solutions while balancing the needs of the organization against the expectations of individual employees
  • Perform other duties as assigned

 

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a baccalaureate degree in related field from an accredited university plus two (2) years of professional experience in Human Resources or related field
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of ethics in communications, records and data collection/analysis
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, strong attention to detail is essential
  • Ability to work overtime on short notice, ability to work with little supervision
  • Ability to make effective and timely decisions on own when necessary
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Eligibility for a Louisiana Driver's License

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Human Resources experience in a Higher Education environment
  • Five (5) or more years of previous professional level HR experience

$28,000 – $38,750
