Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) is accepting applications for the Dean of Students and Campus Life SUSLA is a comprehensive community college serving Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas in Northwest Louisiana.  It is one of five campuses constituting the Historically Black Southern University System. The University serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate students and offers 32 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields including Allied Health, Nursing, Aerospace Technology, Business Studies, Behavioral Science/Education and Science & Technology.

 

Responsibilities

Under immediate supervision of the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success, the Dean of Students and Campus Life is primarily responsible for managing, implementing and creating student events and programming.  Must be create, innovative, organized and energetic. Responsibilities will include managing student leadership groups such as Student Government Association, Student Center Board, campus clubs and organizations, Miss Southern University at Shreveport and her Royal Court, Intramural Sports, and auxiliary organizations (cheer, dance, campus mascot). Provides on-site supervision of events and activities at night and on weekends. Arranges, plans, advertises, and evaluates student programming.  Also supervises the Coordinator of Residential Life and provides leadership to residential life programming and engagement along with providing oversite to the judicial affairs process.

 

Further, this candidate will enhance student learning and personal development thorough collaborative efforts with the faculty curriculum committee and co-curricular campus planning. Manages the coordination of campus events, including scheduling student union facilities and event calendar maintenance.  Work with faculty and staff to create and sustain campus clubs and organizations to provide consistent leadership training and advice to all campus clubs and organizational leaders.  

 

Coordinates, prepares, and disseminates publications related to student clubs, student

activities, student intramurals, and student services, to students, staff and the community.

Assists in preparing and editing student flyers, posters, literature and other materials

prepared by student groups for on and off-campus distribution. Implements and oversees

processes for posting/distributing of materials on campus as requested.

 

Knowledgeable in booking and scheduling professional talent for campus concerts, seminars, convocations, etc.

 

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Manage and supervise the operations of the Office of Student Activities.
  • Establish and assess measurable student learning outcomes, program goals, and objectives.
  • Maintain statistical reports, surveys and other records to assess accomplishments, appropriate student learning outcomes, and departmental needs.
  • Compile and analyze data related to student participation and program evaluation; develop
  • organizational work processes which facilitate attainment of established program goals and
  • objectives.
  • Evaluate all assigned programs and recommend programmatic goals and objectives to the Assistant Vice Chancellor for Student Success or designee.
  • Facilitate cross-cultural dialogue and communication among diverse campus constituencies.
  • Supervise, create and implement programming for residential life, commuter students, students at the Metro Campus and Aerospace Center.
  • Supervise Miss SUSLA and her Royal Court
  • Manage the student election process.
  • Provide student leadership training, mentorship, volunteer and service learning opportunities for students.
  • Assist in establishing and implementing student policies
  • Maintain knowledge relative to best practices, laws, policies and procedures relative to student life.
  • Provide and conduct leadership seminars, training, workshops and campus-wide events for
  • students, student government organizations, and other student groups and organizations.
  • Provide support, and direction to student groups, organizations and advisors through leadership, organizational and resource development. This includes support to student clubs and individuals.
  • Direct program coordination activities with other student services functions and instructional programs; provide technical expertise and input concerning student activities.
  • Govern campus events, student activities, and programs
  • Manage multiple budgets.
  • Coordinate with professional acts to book, negotiate contracts, and coordinate performances, speeches, symposiums, etc.
  • Promote events and activities on all social media platforms
  • Develop leadership training program for all student leaders.
  • And other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications

Bachelor's degree in management, mass communication, education or related fields from an accredited college or university; 3 years’ experience in student leadership development, event coordination and planning, and exceptional communication skills. At least two years of experience in campus recreation or community service, residential life, auxiliary units, or related area. Must have problem solving skills, ability to work many nights and weekends.  Must be able to travel and operate a motor vehicle and feel comfortable driving a 15-passenger van for student trips.

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in student affairs, public administration, mass communication, education or related field.   
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Proactive and self-sufficient with the ability to manage up and across
  • Excellent planning and organizational skills (ability to meet deadlines)
  • Initiative and leadership qualities, with the ability to relate to diverse student populations
  • Able to build relationships with academic partners.
  • Strong attention to detail, adept in creative problem-solving, and resourceful
