SUMMARY
Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) is accepting applications for the Dental Hygiene Instructor. SUSLA is a comprehensive community college serving Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas in Northwest Louisiana. It is one of five campuses constituting the Historically Black Southern University System. The University serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate students and offers 32 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields including Allied Health, Nursing, Aerospace Technology, Business Studies, Behavioral Science/Education and Science & Technology.
Position Overview:
Dental Hygiene Instructor to teach didactic and clinical dental hygiene courses.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Teach didactic dental hygiene courses as assigned.
- Teach students in the clinical dental setting.
- Evaluate student progress.
- Advise incoming and current students.
- Attend orientations, staff meetings, and faculty meetings as scheduled.
- Attend graduation ceremonies.
- Assist in inventory and ordering of supplies and texts.
- Maintain continuing education hours particularly in the subject they are assigned to teach.
- Attend the pinning ceremony and assist in distributing the pins.
- Other duties as assigned by the program Director or Academic Dean
Minimum Qualifications:
- The dental hygiene instructor must hold a Bachelor’s Degree in Dental
- hygiene or related subject.
- Must be a licensed Dental Hygienist and a graduate of a program accredited by the Commission of Dental Accreditation (CODA).
- The dental hygiene instructor must be licensed in the State of Louisiana.
- The dental hygiene instructor must hold a current CPR license.
- The minimum education is a Bachelor Degree.
- The minimum experience is 4 years of dental hygiene clinical experience.
Preferred:
- An excellent knowledge of and interest in science, particularly the science of oral health.
- Good eyesight.
- Good manual dexterity and a steady hand.
- The ability to concentrate for long periods of time.
- The ability to use specialized dental equipment.
- Patience with students
- Maintain a positive attitude.
- Licensed to administer Local Anesthesia.
- Knowledge in the operation of digital x-rays.
- Knowledge in the operation of computers.
- Knowledge in the operation of Excel.
Working Conditions and Physical Requirements:
- Dental Hygiene instructor is required to stand for extended periods of time while training students in the clinic.
This position is grant funded and continued employment is contingent upon sponsor approval and consistent funding levels.
