Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) is accepting applications for the Director of Multicultural and International Affairs. SUSLA is a comprehensive community college serving Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas in Northwest Louisiana.  It is one of five campuses constituting the Historically Black Southern University System. The University serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate students and offers 32 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields including Allied Health, Nursing, Aerospace Technology, Business Studies, Behavioral Science/Education and Science & Technology.

 

Director of Multicultural and International Affairs serve in the functions for the institutional international student recruitment, orientation and support services for all related international student affairs. Advise existing and prospective international students on the Admissions, Academic coaching, and cultural engagement through student activities. Serve as one of the institutional Designated School Officials (DSOs) to track and monitor the immigration status of multicultural and international students through the Student Exchange and Visitor Information System (SEVIS). Provide resources to assist international student adjustment on campus.

    • Develops and manages partnerships to attract and maintain multicultural, international and other diverse student populations.
    • Coordinate with institutional functions of recruitment, orientation, registration, advisement, etc., to ensure that the specifications and support services for the multicultural & international students. 
    • Advise existing and prospective multicultural and international students on the program, course, and transfer process by providing current information using exemplary customer service through phone, email, Banner system and in person counseling and responding to all inquiries within 24 hours. 
      Coordinate specific multicultural and international recruitment initiatives and hose new student orientation workshops for multicultural and international students.
    • Serve as the institution’s Designated School Officials (DSOs) to track and monitor the immigration status of multicultural and international students through the Student Exchange and Visitor Information System (SEVIS).
    • Follow up with prospective student inquiries and applicants to guide them through the admission and enrollment process. Process assigned domestic, multicultural, and international student applications.
    • Evaluate foreign credentials to ensure compliance with institutional and federal guidelines. Assist with the Issue I-20’s, Certificate of Eligibility for Student Status, to prospective students who wish to enroll at the institution according to institutional and federal guidelines.
    • Implement cross-cultural activities designed to support the unique needs of multicultural and international students, and to encourage integration with home students; including the development and implementation of retention strategies.
    • Maintain a library of community resources to refer multicultural and international students.
    • Provide guidance to multicultural and international students with immigration applications, work permits, reinstatements, change of status, and economic hardship employment.
      Work in conjunction with other campus units to share best practices and develop coherent programs to support multicultural and international students across the institution and ensure the information is communicated to students.
    • Serve as liaison with institutions to assist student with the transfer in/out process.
    • Work in conjunction with the Information Technology Center to develop a web presence highlighting services for multicultural and international students on the institution’s website.
    • Serves as liaison to local or state government agencies regarding issues related to non-immigrant students. 
    • Participate in training and maintains a relationship with professional organizations to keep abreast of changes in federal rules and regulations.
    • Manage the transfer of multicultural and international students’ admission files to the Registrar’s Office for permanent record keeping immediately after census each semester.
      Perform related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master degree or bachelor's degree and professional experience in multicultural, international or special population student advising and working with complex federal immigration regulations in a multicultural environment. Bachelor’s degree with (5) years of relevant experience may substitute for the Master’s degree requirement
  • Excellent conflict resolution and organizational skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office products and the ability to learn other software programs.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks and projects simultaneously and meet stated project deadlines.
  • Proactive in identifying potential issues; ability to investigate, analyze and interpret data or information for accuracy and completeness in order to make informed decisions.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment. 
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of ethics in data collection and analysis. 
  • Strong attention to detail is essential. 
  • Must be able to be certified by Homeland Security as a designated school official.

 

Preferred Qualifications

Demonstrated working knowledge of F-1 and J-1 immigration regulations, along with familiarity with the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

$48,000 to $55,000
