SUMMARY

Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) is accepting applications for the Educational Advocate/Tech Specialist position. SUSLA is a comprehensive community college serving Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas in Northwest Louisiana.  It is one of five campuses constituting the Historically Black Southern University System.  The University serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate students and offers 32 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields including Allied Health, Nursing, Aerospace Technology, Business Studies, Behavioral Science/Education and Science & Technology.

 

POSITION SUMMARY:

The Educational Advocate is responsible for developing and implementing participant educational plans for middle and high school students. Responsible for technology support and innovation programming. Provide academic advisement, guided educational activities including workshops, motivational presentations and tutorial support.  This includes coordinating all aspects of the Educational Advocate role and working collectively with other related partnership programs as needed.

 

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide an overall technology model that will stimulate the advancement of technology systems and programming for daily operations, workshop innovations, and academic advancement in areas such as STEMs.
  • Coordinate with secondary partners and implement recruitment activities to support enrollment of eligible participants. Manage a participant case-load and record keeping.
  • Assist in the design, development and implementation of educational outreach programs that support whole participant growth and development for minorities and under-served populations; recruits the underrepresented population of students at low-performing schools in Caddo and surrounding Parishes
  • Provide academic advisement, career readiness resources and guidance activities, educational/degree planning, course selection, and related support services for the programs offered by Southern University at Shreveport (SUSLA)
  • Collaborate and create on-going partnerships with faculty, staff, and community activists to identify, define and meet educational and social planning needs, goals and objectives of participants
  • Partner with division colleagues to provide expertise, initiative and leadership to design solutions that help current students overcome and/or remove barriers to their success through co- and extra- curricular activities
  • Assess programs and services, evaluates data and makes changes as required to improve participant outcomes
  • Interpret policies and procedures under Education General Administrative Regulations (EDGAR) and Office of Management and Budget (OMB) for program and budget compliance
  • Work within assigned financial parameters, makes recommendations for program and budget development
  • Other duties as assigned

 

REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor’s degree required (Master’s preferred) in education, counseling, social work, behavioral science, computer science or related field from an accredited institution of higher education.

 

PREFERRED:  

  • Knowledge and experience in technology-based academics or career counseling theory/methodology.
  • Experience in coordinating programs and activities preferred
  • Experience working with middle or high school students a plus
  • Background representative of population to be served (TRiO/low-income and/or first-generation college student) highly preferred
  • Knowledge of college systems and processes including admissions, financial aid, and advising
  • Capacity to assess academic and non-academic student needs to develop coherent, realistic service plans
  • Ability to handle confidential and sensitive information
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to communicate with supervisor and peers, school administrators, families and students in sometimes stressful situations

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • Work experience in TRiO programs

$35,000-$38,000
