SUMMARY

Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) is accepting applications for the Human Resource Generalist position SUSLA is a comprehensive community college serving Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas in Northwest Louisiana.  It is one of five campuses constituting the Historically Black Southern University System. The University serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate students and offers 32 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields including Allied Health, Nursing, Aerospace Technology, Business Studies, Behavioral Science/Education and Science & Technology.

Responsibilities

The Human Resources Generalist/Benefits Coordinator will perform administrative tasks and services to facilitate human resource processes at all business locations. This role is responsible for administering employee benefits to include health/welfare and retirement plans, assisting employees with benefits enrollment and questions, verifying and processing benefits insurance billing, maintaining employee database and files, and ensuring compliance with required benefit notices. This position resolves benefits-related problems and ensures effective use of plans and positive employee relations.

Primary Responsibilities: 

Job duties include but are not limited to:

  • Administering health/welfare plans, including enrollments, changes, and terminations. Processes required documents through payroll and insurance providers to ensure accurate record-keeping and proper deductions. Reconciles benefits statements.
  • Administering retirement plans, including enrollments, changes, and terminations. Processes required documents through payroll and retirement plan providers to ensure accurate record-keeping and proper deductions. Other duties may include compiling annual census data.
  • Processing disability, workman’s compensation and FMLA claims. Assists and advises in the proper application of regulatory issues, including but not limited to FMLA, ADA, FLSA, etc.
  • Answers frequently asked questions from applicants and employees relative to standard policies, benefits, hiring processes, etc.
  • Ensures accurate and up-to-date human resource files, records, and documentation. Maintains the integrity and confidentiality of human resource files and records. while remaining in compliance with government and company requirements for record keeping/retention.
  • Conducts onboarding and new hire orientation.
  • Assists with processing of terminations, process terminal pay, etc.
  • Performs periodic audits of HR files and records to ensure that all required documents are collected and filed appropriately.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Creates and compile reports/statistical data to support the needs of the University
  • Coordinates internal investigations related to any regulatory compliance issues as well as company policies, Title IX assistance, etc.
  • Processes requests and investigates employee issues in the grievance/fair treatment review process
  • Coordinate required training, Comprehensive Public Training Program (CPTP), and maintain associated records
  • Participates in planning special events, communications, and fosters employee participation
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Must have a baccalaureate degree from an accredited university plus two (2) years of professional experience in Human Resources or related field.
  • Ability to work independently and in a team environment
  • Must be able to maintain confidentiality and demonstrate knowledge and understanding of ethics in communications, records and data collection/analysis
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail is essential
  • Knowledge of employee benefits and applicable laws.
  • Excellent time management skills with a proven ability to meet deadlines.
  • Ability to function well in a high-paced and at times stressful environment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Human Resources experience in a Higher Education environment
  • Three (3) or more years of previous professional level HR experience
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office

COMPENSATION:

$33,000 to $36,400 (Compensation will be within this range and commensurate with education and work experience).
