Financial Aid Eligibility Requirements

To receive assistance from the student aid programs, students must:

• Have applied and been accepted for admission to the University
• Have met the academic requirements
• Submit an official high school transcript or General Education Development (GED) certificate, if a beginning freshman
• Be enrolled or accepted for enrollment as a regular student working toward a degree or certificate in an eligible program
• Be a U.S. citizen or eligible non citizen
• Have a valid Social Security number
• Sign a statement on the FAFSA certifying that they will use federal/state student aid for educational purposes only and are not in default on a federal student loan or owe a refund on a federal grant.
• Register with Selective Service if required (If you are a male 18 through 25 years of age and you have not yet registered with Selective Service, you can give Selective Service permission to register you by checking a box on the FAFSA. You can also register through the internet at www.sss.gov.)
• Not have earned a Degree   

Students who transfer to Southern University at Shreveport from any other college/university or vocation/technical schools must take the necessary steps to ensure that they will be eligible for financial aid as it does not automatically transfer with them.

Official academic and financial aid transcripts from all schools previously attended must be submitted. As soon as possible, transfer applicants should contact the Financial Aid Office to find out what steps should be taken to ensure receipt of aid at Southern University at Shreveport

A new law implemented on July 1, 2000 suspends aid eligibility for students convicted under federal or state law of sale or possession of drugs. If you have been convicted of drug possession, you will be ineligible for one year from the date of a first conviction, two years after a second conviction and indefinitely after a third conviction. If you have been convicted for selling drugs, you will be ineligible for two years from the date of a first conviction and indefinitely after a second conviction. If you lose eligibility, you can regain eligibility early by successfully completing an acceptable drug rehabilitation program.

Summer Eligibility
Continuing students and beginning freshmen only, if eligible, will be considered for financial aid for Summer Sessions. Scholarships and loans are not available.
