Tutorial Services

The college experience can be exciting, challenging and sometimes frustrating.   

Student Support Service is designed to provide students with the critical academic support necessary for a successful college experience.Promoting academic success at Southern University At Shreveport is a major priority of Student Support Services. Funded by the Department of Education Student Support Services TRIO Grant, the mission is to provide supportive services for eligible students in an attempt to:

  • Increase retention rates
  • Increase graduation rates
  • Foster a climate of institutional support
  • Facilitate transfer to four-year institutions for students choosing to earn a bachelor's degree want to get going. Serving the Brunswick area for more than 20 years!

  • Students should schedule an entrance interview with a counselor who will evaluate the student's academic and career goals

Tutoring Services

The Student Support Services provides free tutorial assistance in a variety of subjects such as Math, Science and English to all program participants. Participants should contact their assigned academic counselor to schedule one-on-one tutoring with qualified tutors.

Who Qualifies for SSS tutoring?

  • Students who have an academic need for services
    Prospective students should speak with an Tutorial counselor in the Students Support Services in the Fine Art s building room C15 .

  • A first-generation college student
    An individual whose parents have not received a bachelor's degree

  • A low-income student
    Students must meet specific income guidelines as established by the U.S. Department of Education. In general, students receiving Pell Grants are frequently eligible

  • A student who has a diagnosed physical and/or learning disability
    Students with disabilities means a person who has a diagnosed mental impairment that substantially limits that person’s Ability to participate in the educational experiences and opportunities offered by the grantee institution. Disabled students with diagnosed learning disabilities comprise a relatively small part of the student population but always require one-to-one tutoring and counseling.
