Director of Career Services

Summary

Southern University at Shreveport, Louisiana (SUSLA) is accepting applications for the Director of Career Services. SUSLA is a comprehensive community college serving Shreveport, Bossier City, and surrounding areas in Northwest Louisiana.  It is one of five campuses constituting the Historically Black Southern University System. The University serves approximately 3,000 undergraduate students and offers 32 undergraduate degrees and certificate programs in a variety of fields including Allied Health, Nursing, Aerospace Technology, Business Studies, Behavioral Science/Education and Science & Technology.

 

Responsibilities

Under minimal supervision, the Director of Career Services is responsible for employer relations, job development initiatives, and service learning activities. Under the general supervision of the Vice Chancellor for Community and Workforce Development, the incumbent directs the operation, policy-making, and development of career services for students and alumni.

The Director for Career services focuses on providing counseling and assistance concerning career and technical education decisions. Administers cooperative education programs. Establishes relationships with potential employers, continuously increasing the number, and improving the quality of job/internship/service learning opportunities. The incumbent coordinates recruitment activities, career/job fairs, maintains on-line career center management system, advise students and alumni on job/internship search related activities, collaborate with faculty staff regarding job development/recruitment efforts and coordinates placement surveys/reports.  

The Office of Career Services works with two clients: the employer who relies on the school to find a qualified candidate, and the graduate who is depending on Career Services to prepare for and find a good job opportunity.

Specific duties are:

  • Perform job counseling and interest inventories with students to identify abilities, needs, interests, values in relation to job, career, and service learning opportunities. (inclusive of individual and group services)
  • Provides career-related seminars for interested students.
  • Maintains an up-to-date career resources library (inclusive of online resources)
  • Conducts the annual graduate employment survey.
  • Maintains, posts, and/or distributes information concerning full and part-time jobs.
  • Maintains membership and active involvement in professional organizations.
  • Reviews and updates annually all career services publications including the career guide, career services brochure, and graduate survey.
  • Supervises YNI and YBS Career Specialist and one full-time program specialist.
  • Assist university in the development of the annual local application plan and annual reporting
  • Initiate outreach activities and establish relationship with employers, including coordination of employer site visits, representation at job fairs and participation in networking events.
  • Oversee on-campus recruitment activities, including information tables/sessions, resume collections, and on-campus interviews.
  • Develop and maintain on-line career management system; providing student and alumni with access to job and internship listings and recruitment information.
  • Advise students and alumni on career and service learning related issues through walk-ins, appointments and classroom/group presentations.
  • Coordinate the facilitation of all aspects of service learning activities
  • Develop and implement outreach/marketing efforts, including paper and email correspondence, promotional materials and programming.
  • Collaborate with faculty, staff and student; initiating employer/faculty advisory boards and student/alumni focus groups.
  • Identifies deficiencies and provide recommendations to determine methods of correction.
  • Maintains up-to-date and accurate employer/partner contact file(s) to properly represent available opportunities to students, faculty and staff.
  • Establishes and maintains all student files and documentation needed to complete administrative reports.
  • Create employer/partner awareness by active involvement in community organizations and/or by informing public of services.
  • Critiques job search contacts, resumes, and work search plans to identify and resolve possible barriers to employment.
  • Conduct follow-up surveys and collect data regarding placement and retention of students in employment, military, or other further training.
  • Other duties as related to the proposed job function

 

Minimum Qualifications

  • Master's degree in student personnel services, counseling and guidance, or a discipline whose preparation is suitable for this position.
  • At least three years of professional experience in university/college setting or in business in a human resources or training and development function is required. Full-time experience on a college/university student services staff is preferred. Important knowledge and capabilities necessary include career counseling techniques, knowledge of job trends and career development skills, effective public relations and networking abilities, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • This employee must be able to effectively direct existing, comprehensive career services programs, and to develop new ones on his/her own initiative. Dependability, creativity, good judgment, professionalism, and dedication to sound principles of student development are paramount among necessary characteristics for this position.

Preferred Qualifications

  • At least five years of professional experience in university/college setting or in business in a human resources or training and development function is required. Full-time experience on a college/university student services staff is preferred. Important knowledge and capabilities necessary include career counseling techniques, knowledge of job trends and career development skills, effective public relations and networking abilities, and excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Salary Range: 40,000-45,000                                        (This is a full time position
